Where the water shows up tells you most of what you need to know — including when the safe next step is to stop and call for help.

Water and electricity: stop first

Before any troubleshooting, one situation overrides the rest. If water is near electrical parts, running toward an outlet, or dripping onto anything powered, treat it as a hazard. Stop the system using a safe, dry control you can reach without touching anything wet, keep people away, and arrange qualified help. Do not touch wet switches, plugs, or panels, and do not open the equipment to look inside. Start with where the water appears

The distinction that matters most is indoor versus intended drainage. Water at a confirmed condensate outlet can be normal discharge; its presence or absence alone does not prove that drainage is fault-free or blocked. Water escaping the indoor head onto the wall, ceiling, or floor belongs in the stop-and-call category above.

Possible causes, not diagnoses

Once anyone is safe and an active indoor leak is stopped, it’s worth understanding what could be behind it — as possibilities, not a diagnosis you can confirm by eye. A manufacturer support page lists blocked or dirty drainage, an indoor unit not positioned to drain properly, a coil that froze and later thawed, and a cracked or disconnected drain pan or hose. Any of those can put water where it doesn’t belong, and a single symptom rarely tells you which one you have.

That is deliberately where this guide stops short of a fix. Clearing an internal drain, adjusting how a head is mounted, and opening the unit to reach a pan or hose are technician tasks — the kind of work manufacturer pages sometimes describe but that isn’t homeowner-safe. What to record for a technician

  • Exactly where the water appears — indoor head, the wall or ceiling below it, the intended outdoor outlet, or the outdoor unit.
  • What mode the system was in — cooling, dry, or heating — and roughly the outdoor conditions.
  • When it started and whether it’s constant or comes and goes.
  • Whether you can see any ice on the indoor or outdoor unit.
  • Any lights, codes, or beeps the controller is showing — reported, not interpreted.
  • Whether it’s one indoor head or more than one, if you have several.

You don’t need to diagnose any of it. Reporting what you saw is exactly what lets a technician arrive prepared.
