Building Operating Management Names
Y-Series as 2014 Top Product

February 26_BOM Product of the Year Award ImageBuilding Operating Management recently named our Y-Series VRF Zoning System as a recipient of a 2014 Top Products Award!

This award is especially important to us because it is 100 percent reader-selected. This means that our customers, facility managers and executives, who read this publication voted to recognize us as one of the products they considered the most useful and innovative for the year. We’re thrilled to have made the list!

This is the fourth time we’ve received this award. Last year, the PAR-30 Controller made the list as a 2013 Top Product. Our products have also been winners in 2009 and 2010.

Project Profile: Chandler City Hall, Chandler, Ariz.

January 29_Chandler City Hall ImageFor more than 20 years, city officials in Chandler, Ariz., set aside funds to pay for a new municipal complex. The goal was to create a sustainable, mixed-use city hall that would cater to the community’s civic needs and meet the city’s energy reduction goals. Most importantly, the new complex’s design needed to be intelligent and reliable because it not only houses the city offices and council chambers but the city hall’s nerve center – 17 electrical rooms and nine data closets – as well.

Tackling the challenge was Phoenix’s The Smith Group JJR (Smith), who designed and engineered the new five-building, 137,000-square-foot civic center complex, which now also includes a television studio, printing center, community art gallery, courtyard and parking facility.

Smith’s lead mechanic, Jon Silhol, PE, LEED AP, BD+C knew that the center’s multiple electrical rooms and data closets, which provides power to each of the five buildings, needed a high performance HVAC system that could handle the inevitable heat gain produced by the equipment and maintain the room temperature at a constant 75 degrees Fahrenheit – a crucial factor to the equipment’s operation – without fail.

Silhol decided our Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) zoning system was the best fit for the job. For the city hall’s electrical hub, he went with our Y-Series technology and the R2-Series for smaller rooms, bathrooms and hallways. The zoning capability of these systems allow for the HVAC in the nerve center to operate separately from the HVAC systems powering the rest of the complex. In the event of a power failure, stand-by generators can power the low electric load requirement of the Y-Series and one of the R2-Series systems, instead of having to power HVAC for the entire complex, providing the utmost security and reliability.

The new city hall strikes that hard-to-find balance between aesthetics and practicality, serving as the city’s icon of excellent design and sustainability. And, as the icing on the cake, Chandler was recently named one of only 24 city halls in the entire country to receive the LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
