Project Profile: Robb Home

Michelle Robb is no ordinary homeowner – perhaps you even recognize her name. As our very own Director of Residential Marketing, Robb knows HVAC inside and out. So you can understand what a vote of confidence it is that, when faced with replacing her home’s old HVAC system, she chose none other than our Diamond Comfort System™.

The selected Diamond Comfort System, comprised of MXZ outdoor units and a combination of MVZ and SEZ indoor units, offered Robb true zoning. She said, “There are two of us in the home: my 84-year-old mom and me. I’m not home much, so we were conditioning an entire home when only one person was there during the day.”

Zoned technology also offered Robb something she wasn’t seeing much with other manufacturers: the option for ducted units with an INVERTER-driven compressor. She said, “A multi-position unit would work when nothing else would. Most of the time, we live in the den/kitchen area. There wasn’t a wall location that lent itself to a wall-mounted unit. And I’d done major renovations to the ceiling, so no space could accommodate a lay-in. Multi-position was it!”

Since installation, Robb has been controlling her units through our kumo cloud™ programmable controller app. “I didn’t want anything on the walls – aesthetically – so Mitsubishi Electric’s kumo cloud app was great. But my mom needed to control her area not through an app. Obviously, I want my mom to be comfortable, which meant her own set of controls. So she now has her own zone with her own wall-mounted controller.”

Project Profile: Primrose School of South Tampa

Primrose Schools provide early childhood education at over 300 franchised locations across the country. One Florida location – the Primrose School of South Tampa, serving students from six weeks old to first grade – stands out as a feat of engineering and construction. Our Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) technology is a big part of that showcase, and has helped the school earn LEED® Silver certification alongside impressive energy savings.

This project was particularly interesting because of its urban location, which meant the selected HVAC system required a small footprint and a flexible, easy installation. Rick Radtke, who co-owns this and two other Primrose Schools with his wife, said, “A traditional Primrose has a condenser farm on the grounds, but I needed that space for playgrounds. With VRF, I could build a roof well – get all of the condensers up on the roof in a very small space.”

Mark Pavey, AIA, principal architect, Children’s Design Group, Gulf Shores, Alabama, hadn’t previously worked with VRF, but was impressed by the idea. “It seemed like a good technology for energy savings, and the ability to vary the output of the units to match the demand made it very attractive.”

Since installation, the project team is confident in their decisions. Pavey said, “The indoor air quality at this school is excellent. In a split system, you have to condition to the maximum load. With this system you match the load to the capacity; it’s a huge advantage for controlling humidity.” Radtke is also pleased with the school’s energy consumption. “I’ve built two other Primroses. This one is twice as big but my electricity bill runs about 20 percent less than the other two schools combined!”

Project Profile: Asbury United Methodist Church

The Asbury United Methodist Church (AUMC) in Harrisonburg, Virginia, has been welcoming guests through its doors for 228 years. Today, the church still offers religious services but also serves as a place for education and community activities. AUMC’s education and community wing totals 23,000 square feet of the building and quickly needed a long-term HVAC solution.

Pastor Bob Talbott and Bill Rees, AUMC’s chairman of the trustees, both agreed that the current HVAC system required too much maintenance, and that Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) was the perfect solution for the supplementary space. Rees said, “It was the efficiency and functionality that drew us to it – to be able to control individual rooms, to be able to schedule and change the temperature based on the comfort of the folks in the room.”

AUMC selected Blauch Brothers, Inc., Harrisonburg, to complete the project. Winston Rhodes, PE, design engineer, Blauch Brothers, felt Mitsubishi Electric was a wise choice. “Mitsubishi [Electric] was clearly the most field-proven; it has all the kinks worked out as the most mature product in the VRF line.”

Without going over budget, the installation was successful, and the result has been extremely positive for AUMC. The church now has the control and zoning abilities it wanted.

As Rees said, “The system has performed nicely given the variety of uses. Our education wing is used every day – morning, afternoon and evening. The big spaces are used, and the small classrooms are used. So it’s a variety of uses at a variety of times, and the Mitsubishi [Electric] system is performing very, very well.”

Project Profile: McVille Manor

McVille Manor, located in Madison County, Alabama, has been passed down through one family since it was first built in 1814. The house also holds a place on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Through the years, McVille Manor has seen its share of expansions and renovations; however, none of them adequately addressed the home’s cooling and heating issues. In a climate that can easily reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit with 100 percent humidity, window units just weren’t doing the job. The 200-year-old home needed a minimally invasive system that could preserve the home, itself, as well as its original character.

Since the house is old and fragile, it could not support conventional ductwork. After consulting with contractors, museum curators and an architect, homeowner Marguerite Ellison chose our Zoned Comfort Solutions™, mixing and matching wall-mounted and floor-mounted units depending on what each space allowed and what looked best.

Eddy Childress, owner, Childress Air Conditioning & Heating, New Market, Alabama, was already a fan of Mitsubishi Electric before installing Zoned Comfort Solutions at McVille Manor: “With this system, you can install with limited impact to the space – not having to cut large holes in the walls or floor.” The house can now maintain a comfortable indoor environment year-round. With that reliable comfort finally secured, McVille Manor will soon begin hosting events, tours and weddings.

LEEDing the Way

On September 24, 2016, the Smithsonian Institution will cut the red ribbon to its 19th museum. Taking the last vacant site on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., The National Museum of African American History and Culture houses over 36,000 artifacts telling stories about how African Americans contributed to the foundation of today’s society. We are deeply honored to be a part of this momentous occasion and this important landmark.

Lead designer David Adjaye and lead architect Philip Freelon designed the building by drawing inspiration from cultures such as the Greco-Romans and Africans. The well-recognized, bronze-colored lattice wraps the entire building but also allows natural sunlight to brighten the interior. Adjaye’s exterior design choice was just one factor that helped the building become the first among the Smithsonian museums to earn LEED® Gold certification. The building contains other systems contributing LEED points, including solar hot water panels on the roof, a geothermal groundwater system and our CITY MULTI® Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) zoning system.

Project Profile: Tiny Surf House

In the early 2000s, the tiny house trend hit the ground running when homeowners wanted to embrace a simplified lifestyle. As featured on HGTV’s Tiny House, Big Living, tiny house owners Mark and Jen Athanacio loved this new lifestyle because it combined affordable living and comfort in a small space. However, these advantages also came with a question – how can you adequately cool and heat a 224-square-foot house?

When the Athanacios moved from an efficiency apartment to a tiny house in Naples, Florida, they wanted an HVAC system that would provide quality cooling and heating without the stress of having to pay hefty household bills. The Athanacios worked with Speedy Air Conditioning, Inc., Naples, one of our Diamond Contractors™ to select a system that would also give them the ability to adjust airflow throughout the small space.

Limited interior space can be a challenge, but our Zoned Comfort Solutions™ proved to be a perfect fit for this tiny house. Just because the Athanacios’ cooling and heating system is small and their bills are low doesn’t mean their comfort is reduced. Talking about our M-Series system, Mark said, “It’s so quiet. I’m standing under [the indoor unit] right now and still talking on the phone! Overall, it’s just been fantastic. The system is so much more efficient and it looks so much better than window units. I don’t know why more people don’t do this.”

Project Profile: Simpson Hall – University of Florida

For University of Florida alumni and residents, the city of Gainesville is affectionately referred to as “The Swamp.” It was exactly that muggy humidity and those high temperatures that plagued the school’s buildings, prompting renovations to the electrical and HVAC systems in Simpson Hall. Last renovated in the mid 1970s, the 34,847-square-foot residence hall was in dire need of an HVAC update.

Chad Doering, mechanical engineer and project manager, Moses & Associates, Inc., Gainesville, specified the new HVAC system. “We wanted to be able to dehumidify and maintain indoor pressure, which was not something we were able to do well with the previous system.” He recognized that a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system would not only achieve these goals, but would do so cost-effectively – both in terms of the lifecycle-cost analysis he completed, and with the money saved by installing less equipment. Doering said, “This install covers 143 zones and if we wanted to give each student personalized control, we would have needed a branch controller for each zone – that’s 143 branch boxes. With Mitsubishi Electric, we only needed 15 boxes – and five of those were for the outdoor units.”

Our VRF systems are not just more efficient than the competition’s, they are incomparably more energy-efficient than conventional units. The chart below demonstrates the energy savings at Simpson Hall compared to North Hall – a comparable residence hall renovation the school completed around the same time, but with a chilled-water system:

The success of the Simpson Hall renovation prompted the school’s housing department to select our products for a second project – Cypress Hall. Despite being one of the largest residence hall construction projects on campus, the HVAC installation at Cypress Hall cost just $26 per square foot – beating Simpson Hall’s installation costs by an average of $4.

Local Healthcare Project Has Global Impact

NHC Visit

Earlier this month, National Health Center (NHC) opened “Place at The Trace” – a health facility being developed outside of Nashville, Tennessee. In advance of the site opening, Mitsubishi Electric factory representatives traveled from Japan to the U. S. for a walk-through. Visitors toured the 170-room assisted living and health care facility, which spans 23 acres. NHC has installed 16 of our R2-Series Variable Refrigerant Flow systems and 20 of our PEFY-AF Dedicated Outside Air Systems with reheat.

Project team members in attendance included representatives from NHC; American Constructors, Inc., the general contractor; Lee Company, the mechanical contractor; Johnson & Bailey Architects P.C., the architecture firm; Entech Engineering, Inc., the mechanical engineer; and manufacturers representatives from E Solutions for Buildings, LLC.

Highlights From the 2016 Diamond Partners Conference

We are holding our 2016 Diamond Partners Conference at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico during the weekend of March 19 – 22. More than 350 distributors, employees and guests are gathering in preparation of our new fiscal year.

Participants over the weekend have had the opportunity to hear a number of guest speakers and presenters, including former Navy Commander Mike Abrashoff and Metrostudy’s senior director of insights, Toby Morrison. These presentations have run the gamut from new technology applications to product development and marketing strategies, with an eye toward developing trends in 2016.

We have also presented a number of awards to our partners from each of our business units, including the Diamond Partners with Crowning Achievement and Design Excellence awards. Be sure to keep reading as we profile each of these award recipients on our blog over the coming months.

Project Profile – Bethesda Passive House

Bethesda, Maryland, a northwest suburb of Washington, DC enjoys mild winters but endures oppressive summers. As a result, the challenge when planning the area’s first certified Passive House project was installing a system that could handle these hot, humid summers, even in a tight space. The design team selected our S-Series system to answer that need.

The neighborhood produced an additional challenge: aesthetics. Bethesda is full of high-end neighborhoods, so choosing a system that could match the area’s upscale look and feel presented limitations. Our systems provided an easy solution. Architect David Peabody said, “Working the equipment into my design didn’t present many challenges.”

He continued, “[Multi-zone systems] are pretty much the only approach anyone’s using for Passive Houses,” and with good reason. Using our technology, the Lindholm family – who purchased the home post-construction – pays just $57/month on average for cooling and heating. The average energy bill in Maryland is $193/month, and $280/month in the Bethesda area alone. Martin Lindholm said, “We were looking for a bigger house and were interested in a smaller carbon footprint.” We’re glad that our products could be such a flexible solution on this monumental project.
