Project Profile: Robb Home

Michelle Robb is no ordinary homeowner – perhaps you even recognize her name. As our very own Director of Residential Marketing, Robb knows HVAC inside and out. So you can understand what a vote of confidence it is that, when faced with replacing her home’s old HVAC system, she chose none other than our Diamond Comfort System™.

The selected Diamond Comfort System, comprised of MXZ outdoor units and a combination of MVZ and SEZ indoor units, offered Robb true zoning. She said, “There are two of us in the home: my 84-year-old mom and me. I’m not home much, so we were conditioning an entire home when only one person was there during the day.”

Zoned technology also offered Robb something she wasn’t seeing much with other manufacturers: the option for ducted units with an INVERTER-driven compressor. She said, “A multi-position unit would work when nothing else would. Most of the time, we live in the den/kitchen area. There wasn’t a wall location that lent itself to a wall-mounted unit. And I’d done major renovations to the ceiling, so no space could accommodate a lay-in. Multi-position was it!”

Since installation, Robb has been controlling her units through our kumo cloud™ programmable controller app. “I didn’t want anything on the walls – aesthetically – so Mitsubishi Electric’s kumo cloud app was great. But my mom needed to control her area not through an app. Obviously, I want my mom to be comfortable, which meant her own set of controls. So she now has her own zone with her own wall-mounted controller.”

Project Profile: Olsen Residence

Gregg Olsen is a partner with Larry March in Eagle Services, Gilbert, Arizona – a business that offers plumbing, electrical and air conditioning. That experience meant that when it came time to design his new, 3,450-square-foot house, Olsen designed not just the overall layout, but also the actual systems behind its walls. When it came to HVAC, he had three needs: indoor air quality, dollar value and zones. Olsen felt that our Zoned Comfort Solutions met all his needs. It’s a product he knew well after installing it for so many of his own customers.

“I’ve always liked the idea of Mitsubishi [Electric] ductless. These systems give you the ability to cool individual zones,” said Olsen. For the 10 zones in his personal home, some areas can be turned off while others are providing cooling or heating. Everyone can be comfortable, and the Olsens’ only pay to condition the rooms that are occupied. “That is just a much more appealing system than a conventional system. You’re not throwing air where it doesn’t need to go. It’s a no-brainer.”

Olsen trusted our zoned technology, specifically, after years of personal experience from the HVAC contractor side. “When you look at other brands, their infrastructure is not as defined. My company’s history with Mitsubishi [Electric] dates back seven and a half years; we’ve seen that the infrastructure is all there. Parts are readily available, making it easier to begin and complete a project, and to quickly handle any repairs that occur down the line.”

Now, Olsen is his own happy customer. “The system works great. It’s extremely energy-efficient, and that ability to cool rooms when you’re in them has been absolutely perfect. The system maintains the temperature while operating so quietly you hardly know it’s on.”

The Trend Toward Green

Every year, it seems, there’s a new green rating program for homes. A long but still incomplete list includes: DOE Zero Energy Ready Home, EarthCraft, ENERGY STAR®, GreenStar, HERS®, LEED® for Homes, Living Building Challenge™, National Green Building Standard™ and Passive House. In short, builders and homeowners are going green.

Recent studies corroborate this trend. In 2016, McGraw Hill surveyed 116 builders regarding their green building practices. Over a third of those builders completed green projects, which accounted for more than 60 percent of their business. By 2018, the percentage of green projects completed by those builders is expected to rise to 90 percent. Over the same period, just 16 percent of builders are expected not to embrace green building.

The U.S. Green Building Council has attempted to understand why builders and homeowners have sustainability in mind. The top reasons driving this upswing in green building include strong market demand, homeowner cost savings, health, building codes and property values. There doesn’t appear to be one single reason the market is going green, but there is a theme among the reasons: to build and live sustainably.

It helps that green building goes hand-in-hand with advancing technology and decreasing footprints. We’re in an era of high expectations when it comes to convenience, which ultimately means that technology – and often-smart technology – must be integrated throughout a space. It’s also an era of smaller houses as homeowners look to control costs, locate themselves more centrally and live meaningfully. The result is that builders are tasked with providing homes that meet all of the market’s previous demands, but that are also contemporary when it comes to technology and footprint.

Fortunately, builders have tools at their disposal to solve this challenge. Manufacturers are offering mobile apps, products and even entire mechanical systems that help builders create homes they can stand by, and homes people want.

Project Profile: Raising Cane’s Treehouse

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, there is now a 1,200-square-foot, three-story treehouse that is perfectly cooled and heated year-round. It’s such a marvel that it was featured on Animal Planet’s “Treehouse Masters.” We are, to put it lightly, excited about our Zoned Comfort Solutions being selected for this project. It’s not every day we get to talk about treehouses!

Todd Graves is the owner of the treehouse – and is also the founder, CEO, fry cook and cashier of Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, Baton Rouge. When picturing his future treehouse, Graves said he wanted “an escape from our everyday chaotic lives . . . a space we could use year-round to entertain our friends and our kids.” The ‘year-round’ part is no small feat in Louisiana, where Graves said, “we often have 100 percent humidity.” The treehouse needed an HVAC system that could provide comfort throughout the seasons, and that would match the space’s rustic but modern and clean aesthetic.

Our Zoned Comfort Solutions did the trick, and Graves said the family spends a lot of time enjoying the treehouse as a result. “The units don’t take up a lot of space and they’re really quiet – we really didn’t want something loud! … Ultimately they’re functioning very well for us, and we’re so happy with the whole treehouse.”

Project Profile: New York LEED Home

Hurricane Sandy made landfall October 2012, damaging or destroying hundreds of thousands of homes. One of those homes was a 1940s cottage that belonged to Kim Erle, LEED® AP, founder and president, Sunset Green Home, LLC, New York. When it came time to rebuild, Erle didn’t set out to build a new home, she set out to build the coastal home of the future – a highly efficient, resilient house that would stand up to storms and serve as a model for responsible building practices. The HVAC system up to the challenge was none other than our Zoned Comfort Solutions™.

It was a decision the whole project team agreed on. Rich Manning, owner, Energy Master LI Building Consultants, Hauppauge, New York, served as the project’s energy specialist. He said with zoned technology, “you can have individualized comfort, and there won’t be a duct issue because the mini-splits would have short ductwork from the attic.” From Doug Matz’s perspective, serving as the owner of Flanders Heating & Air Conditioning, Riverhead, New York, going with Zoned Comfort Solutions meant reliability. He said, “Mitsubishi [Electric] has been in the U.S. for decades . . . They have a reputation of being the best, and their service support and engineering support are second to none.” And for Erle, our Zoned Comfort Solutions meant assurance and practicality: “We really like the idea of multi-zone. It allows us to capture more efficiency despite the house’s occupancy varying greatly.”

From here, Erle filed for LEED® Platinum certification. She’s also thought a lot about how comforting it is to be in a home that will not just stand up to the weather but do so efficiently and sustainably. Luckily, she selected the right equipment for the job.

HGTV Star Sabrina Soto Transforms Her Garage

HGTV star and designer, Sabrina Soto, remodeled her home’s garage in Studio City, California, into a functional design studio. Her new flexible workspace features wooden cabinets, vibrant furnishings, large design tables and our Zoned Comfort Solutions™. With zoned technology in her newly designed garage, Soto can work comfortably year-round while having the luxury of being within steps from her living room.

During a recent interview with ApartmentTherapy, Soto said, “After living out the better part of my 30s in a three-room rented Manhattan apartment, I couldn’t wait to create a home studio space that reflected my design aesthetic ‒ fun, playful, modern and effervescent ‒ when I moved to Los Angeles. This space is a true labor of love. I gathered all the tips I employed while designing amazing spaces for my HGTV families over the years and applied them to create a real usable workable space.”

Providing Comfort on the Road to Recovery

In late 2016, Elite Diamond Contractor™, Augusta Fuel, Augusta, Maine, donated labor to install our Zoned Comfort Solutions™ in The Maine Chance Lodge & Retreat, in Belgrade, Maine. The retreat is a part of The Travis Mills Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed by Retired United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills, and dedicates its time to assisting combat-injured veterans. The foundation created the retreat to let veterans and their families visit and relax year-round in a stress-free environment after leaving treatment at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland.

The foundation bought and refurbished a historic mansion built by cosmetics pioneer, Elizabeth Arden, in the late 1920s. The almost 9,000-square-foot property was remodeled and divided into family suites that will be available to veterans and their families. The retreat is scheduled to open in the summer of 2017, ready to provide families with the care and comfort they need.

We are honored that our products can support the efforts of the Travis Mills Foundation, and are deeply grateful that we can provide comfort to those who serve to keep our homes safe everyday.

Project Profile: Concord Riverwalk

A few years ago, Dan Gainsboro, founder and principal of NOW Communities, LLC, Concord, Massachusetts, built the award-winning community of Concord Riverwalk. The West Concord, Massachusetts, development consists of 13 Zero Energy Ready Homes.

While planning the development, Gainsboro faced his largest challenge ‒ finding a system that would cool and heat the homes in an unpredictable climate while also offering impressive energy efficiency. With research and expertise from ZeroEnergy Design, Boston, Gainsboro knew our Zoned Comfort Solutions™ would keep these houses comfortable and efficient even in New England’s icy winter weather.

Gainsboro said, “Japanese-designed mini-splits are just bulletproof. They require little maintenance and are reliable. And the efficiencies!” Gainsboro also noted how year-round performance was a big consideration in the selection process. He continued, “I’ve had good luck with Mitsubishi [Electric] in the past; they’re a bit ahead of the others in terms of addressing concerns related to heating.”

Since project completion, Concord Riverwalk has received media attention across the building industry, applauding its innovative concept and exceptional performance. According to Gainsboro, the residents have also been extremely pleased, especially with their homes’ comfort and low energy costs. Gainsboro said, “I think people are generally pretty satisfied with the return-on-investment for their high-performance home. I believe one resident’s daily electricity is 25 cents a day!”

Project Profile: Stash Residence

When Jenny and Aaron Stash wanted to settle down in Northbrook, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, they searched for a house that would meet their requirements. For the Stashes, that meant sustainability, high indoor air quality and energy efficiency. After an unsuccessful search, the Stashes decided to build a home of their own. They carefully designed and built a three-floor, 3,500-square-foot house and incorporated many sustainable elements into its architecture. The Stashes outfitted the home with bamboo flooring, fiber-cement siding, LED lighting and one of our extremely energy-efficient cooling and heating systems.

The Stashes called in Michael S. Kollman, AIA, LEED AP and the president of SmartHaus, Inc., Prairie View, Illinois, a high-performance home design-build company, to find an HVAC system. The selected system would need to provide year-round comfort and be energy-efficient. Kollman worked with two University of Illinois engineers to find an answer for the house. The result: our Zoned Comfort Solutions™.

Kollman said, “Mini-split heat pumps with a conditioned energy recovery ventilation system would give us all the features we wanted and the highest-obtainable indoor air quality. We also looked at geothermal, radiant and forced air systems, but because the envelope is so efficient we just didn’t need a tremendous amount of energy. Mini-splits were the perfect solution.”

The Stashes’ home qualified for LEED® Platinum certification thanks, in part, to our system’s ability to reduce distribution losses and optimize energy. In addition to helping achieve LEED certification, our system also allowed the Stashes to see a great reduction in energy usage. Compared to other houses in Illinois, the Stashes’ home uses just one-quarter of the energy each month!

Will Homebuyers Pay for Efficiency?

Yes.

To this point, the latest McGraw-Hill Construction report on new and remodeled green homes found that energy-efficient appliances are some of the first things homebuyers look for in a new house — second only to having enough square footage to live comfortably. This was true for both millennials and baby boomers — two generations poised to purchase homes in great numbers.

Why do homebuyers look for energy-efficient appliances? To save on monthly costs and anything related to maintenance. It’s common knowledge that HVAC systems account for a significant portion of monthly energy costs, so many homebuyers think of these systems first. In the latest study by the National Association of Realtors, homebuyers were asked to rank which features are most important to them in their new house. Respondents said HVAC systems were the number one essential feature when it comes to environment.

It’s no surprise the appetite for energy-efficient appliances and the concern over HVAC energy costs has resulted in strong and ever-increasing consumer demand for energy-efficient HVAC. Countless studies and surveys are concluding this very same thing — some looking at demand, others at supply. One example is Navigant Research’s recent report showing that annual revenue from energy-efficient HVAC systems will almost double in the next 15 years, growing to $33.2 billion by 2020.

For builders, the focus on energy-efficient appliances — and energy-efficient HVAC in particular — is an incredible opportunity. If homebuyers are looking for appliances from trusted, well-known brands, builders can feature these products. If buyers are searching out green-certified homes, builders can embark on green projects. This seems to be a time of “if you build it, they will come.” And, even more so, “if you build it energy-efficient, they will buy.”
