Project Profile: McVille Manor

Photography: Tim Tyson: tysonmedia360.com

McVille Manor, located in Madison County, Alabama, has been passed down through one family since it was first built in 1814. The house also holds a place on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Through the years, McVille Manor has seen its share of expansions and renovations; however, none of them adequately addressed the home’s cooling and heating issues. In a climate that can easily reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit with 100 percent humidity, window units just weren’t doing the job. The 200-year-old home needed a minimally invasive system that could preserve the home, itself, as well as its original character.

Since the house is old and fragile, it could not support conventional ductwork. After consulting with contractors, museum curators and an architect, homeowner Marguerite Ellison chose our Zoned Comfort Solutions™, mixing and matching wall-mounted and floor-mounted units depending on what each space allowed and what looked best.

Eddy Childress, owner, Childress Air Conditioning & Heating, New Market, Alabama, was already a fan of Mitsubishi Electric before installing Zoned Comfort Solutions at McVille Manor: “With this system, you can install with limited impact to the space – not having to cut large holes in the walls or floor.” The house can now maintain a comfortable indoor environment year-round. With that reliable comfort finally secured, McVille Manor will soon begin hosting events, tours and weddings.

Project Profile: Tiny Surf House

In the early 2000s, the tiny house trend hit the ground running when homeowners wanted to embrace a simplified lifestyle. As featured on HGTV’s Tiny House, Big Living, tiny house owners Mark and Jen Athanacio loved this new lifestyle because it combined affordable living and comfort in a small space. However, these advantages also came with a question – how can you adequately cool and heat a 224-square-foot house?

When the Athanacios moved from an efficiency apartment to a tiny house in Naples, Florida, they wanted an HVAC system that would provide quality cooling and heating without the stress of having to pay hefty household bills. The Athanacios worked with Speedy Air Conditioning, Inc., Naples, one of our Diamond Contractors™ to select a system that would also give them the ability to adjust airflow throughout the small space.

Limited interior space can be a challenge, but our Zoned Comfort Solutions™ proved to be a perfect fit for this tiny house. Just because the Athanacios’ cooling and heating system is small and their bills are low doesn’t mean their comfort is reduced. Talking about our M-Series system, Mark said, “It’s so quiet. I’m standing under [the indoor unit] right now and still talking on the phone! Overall, it’s just been fantastic. The system is so much more efficient and it looks so much better than window units. I don’t know why more people don’t do this.”

Another Ductless System for Another ‘Blog Cabin’

© 2015 Scripps Networks, LLC

© 2015 Scripps Networks, LLC

The grand prize in this year’s DIY Network Blog Cabin™ Giveaway was a masterful 1970s home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Twenty-three million people entered for a chance to call this ‘Blog Cabin’ home, but it is Albert Zaranka and his wife Ellen who will enjoy the comfort and breathtaking views of this hilltop property.

Builder and design manager Dylan Eastman kept what was salvageable of the original one-story ranch – the foundation and the concrete walls, which he wanted to keep exposed. There were two challenges when it came to the HVAC: the cold, concrete interior and the Upper Northwest climate. Our M-Series Hyper-Heat system offered the solution. Zoned cooling and heating affords the Zarankas personalized comfort in each area of their now multi-level home. Our high performing heat pump will deliver that comfort even in Idaho’s sub-zero winter nights.

This is the third consecutive year we have sponsored the Giveaway. In 2013, our M-Series system helped transform an 1890s rundown home into an awe-inspiring waterfront property in Atlantic, North Carolina. In 2014, it was used in the renovation of a 1920s bungalow in Lake Hamilton, Florida.  Each year, Eastman and his team have turned houses that no one wants into homes millions desire – and we’re proud to have been a part of it.

Project Profile: Fahnestock House

Few problems create as much of a challenge in HVAC design as small spaces. This challenge became very familiar to all involved in the renovation of Fahnestock House (Fahnestock) in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The building, which provides housing to the elderly and disabled, has 26 apartments ranging in size from 420 to 600 square feet. Fahnestock needed an energy-efficient HVAC system that could handle such tight spaces and long runs for copper lines due to the building’s design.

Only one system was able to meet those needs: our M-Series heat pump. Our indoor units measure only eight inches in height, allowing optimal living space for the residents. Our system also offers up to 100 feet for line sets, providing the necessary design and installation flexibility. “Of all the companies, this is the only one I could get to work. The configurations just fit perfectly,” said Contractor Ken Adams, Ken Adams Mechanical, Inc., New Oxford, Pennsylvania.

The HVAC overhaul improved more than just occupant comfort, however. Window units were replaced with air handlers installed behind the drop ceiling, improving the aesthetics of the building inside and outside. It also significantly improved the building’s efficiency, resulting in a 40 percent decrease in monthly energy bills.

Aging in Place Is In, Retirement Homes Are (Kind of) Out

August 4_Aging in Place_Image 1Think everyone is planning to sell their homes after they retire? Well, think again.

An AARP study found 90 percent of people over the age of 65 would like to, if possible, stay in their homes. Eighty percent have no intention of leaving. What does this mean for the building industry? Owners want products that have the potential to outlast them and can cater to their needs as they age. They want homes and products that grow with them.

Long-lasting, adaptable equipment, like our HVAC systems, fit the bill. For example, our M-Series system helped an elderly couple age in place. They can now count on cooling and heating in even the most severe weather, which otherwise would have posed a health hazard. This couple is just one example; over 10,000 baby boomers reach retirement every day, and more and more make no plans to leave their homes.

Read more about the baby boomers, aging in place and the concept behind the universal home design, which the National Association of Home Builders describes as “the design of environments and products to be usable by all people.”

M-Series Featured in Winning Passive House Design

October 7_Green Spaces NextGen Winning Design_ImageWe are proud to announce that our M-Series systems were featured in the winning design in the NextGen Homes Design Competition. green|spaces, a nonprofit that works to advance the sustainability of living, working and building in the Chattanooga, Tennessee region, hosted the competition that plans to produce four next-generation houses to sell on the local market.

The purpose of the competition was to identify the best design solutions for challenging sites with high performance energy goals. Teams were tasked with designing a single-family detached home that met the following requirements:

  • Did not exceed 2,000-square-feet.

  • Featured at least three bedrooms and two full bathrooms.

  • Construction costs did not exceed $140 per square-foot.

  • Produced as much energy as they consumed.

  • Protected and promoted human health.

  • Minimized the production of waste in day to day operations of the home.

A panel of judges reviewed the submitted designs, narrowed the list down to 10 finalists and one winning team: Team 210. When it came to the HVAC design, Team 210 wanted a system that would provide efficient operation, require minimal ductwork and aid in achieving Net-Zero Energy Building certification at a reasonable installation cost. The team decided our systems fit the bill and featured our MSZ-FE  and MXZ heat pumps in their design along with a variety of our indoor units.

Team 210 was awarded $10,000 for its winning design and will work with the project team on developing the drawings, specifications and contracts for construction – Phase II of the competition. The actual construction of the homes, the third and final phase, is scheduled for spring 2015.

We look forward to seeing Team 210’s vision come to life as they begin the next steps towards construction!
