Window A/C units, oil furnaces, boilers and forced-air systems have one thing in common: they just don’t do the job anymore. We still see them in homes today because many homeowners do not know there’s a better option out there. The Central BU recently teamed up with Alliant Energy to change that.

Operation FINALLY HOME: Our First Donation for a Hero!

Last month, we were honored to donate our residential systems to a true American hero, and mark the beginning of our official partnership with Operation FINALLY HOME!

The new home belongs to Staff Sergeant Ray Coffey, who was forced to retire after several insurgent attacks left him with severe injuries, following two deployments to Iraq. Ray returned home with a brain injury that required the temperature in his family’s home be kept so low that they had to wear heavy jackets while indoors.

Henley Homes Inc., Liberty Hill, Texas, built the custom and mortgage-free home for Ray and his family.

With the installation of our systems, Henley Homes Inc. was able to provide both Ray and his family with an environment that suits each of their needs.

“In Ray’s situation when you have migraine headaches, PTSD, he needed a dark room that we could get very cold. Mitsubishi stepped up and gave us individual room air conditioners,” said Gary Henley, co-owner of Henley Homes, Inc.

Ray’s incredible story, as well as footage of the home dedication, was picked up by broadcasting stations in Austin and Philadelphia. One anchor, Jennifer Kendall, anchor, Fox News, had it right when she said, “That means for the first time in a long time one American hero can live comfortably in his home of the brave.”

What Homes do Millennials Buy?

January 23_Improving Economic and Housing Markets ImageAccording to a recent report from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), one out of three Americans who bought a home between 2011 and 2013 were millennials (those 33 years old or younger). The report, titled “Homes Millennials Buy,” explores the home buying behaviors and preferences of this particular generation.

NAHB analyzed the latest American Housing Survey from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau to identify millennials’ preferred home size, purchase price and methods of financing.

The report found the following:

  • Millennials are more likely to buy condominiums and housing in multifamily properties while older generations prefer single-family detached homes.
  • Millennials tend to buy smaller, less expensive homes. A majority of the homes purchased by millenials were under 1,200 square feet and over a quarter of the buyers paid less than $100,000 for their home.
  • Three out of four millennials purchased a home because of its financial appeal.
  • 82 percent of millennials who purchased a home during the two-year period took out a mortgage.
