Will Homebuyers Pay for Efficiency?

Yes.

To this point, the latest McGraw-Hill Construction report on new and remodeled green homes found that energy-efficient appliances are some of the first things homebuyers look for in a new house — second only to having enough square footage to live comfortably. This was true for both millennials and baby boomers — two generations poised to purchase homes in great numbers.

Why do homebuyers look for energy-efficient appliances? To save on monthly costs and anything related to maintenance. It’s common knowledge that HVAC systems account for a significant portion of monthly energy costs, so many homebuyers think of these systems first. In the latest study by the National Association of Realtors, homebuyers were asked to rank which features are most important to them in their new house. Respondents said HVAC systems were the number one essential feature when it comes to environment.

It’s no surprise the appetite for energy-efficient appliances and the concern over HVAC energy costs has resulted in strong and ever-increasing consumer demand for energy-efficient HVAC. Countless studies and surveys are concluding this very same thing — some looking at demand, others at supply. One example is Navigant Research’s recent report showing that annual revenue from energy-efficient HVAC systems will almost double in the next 15 years, growing to $33.2 billion by 2020.

For builders, the focus on energy-efficient appliances — and energy-efficient HVAC in particular — is an incredible opportunity. If homebuyers are looking for appliances from trusted, well-known brands, builders can feature these products. If buyers are searching out green-certified homes, builders can embark on green projects. This seems to be a time of “if you build it, they will come.” And, even more so, “if you build it energy-efficient, they will buy.”

Maximizing Comfort in Health and Wellness Facilities

clinic

Healthcare Facilities Management magazine recently reported the success of some HVAC systems in health and wellness facilities. With stringent indoor air quality requirements, these facilities need systems that condition outside air, monitor and control humidity, filter air and provide ample ventilation. The article reported that beyond these measurable requirements, facility managers also want sustainable and energy-efficient systems. It also recognized a few manufacturers – including us – as meeting these needs.

Specifically, our latest Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) innovation, CITY MULTI® L-Generation Air-source technology, was recognized for its improvements in efficiency and its ability to maximize heat transfer. In regard to facility management, the magazine celebrated our Diamond Controls™ Solutions for its assistance in helping managers modify zone temperatures and observe building conditions, such as occupancy, CO2 levels, energy usage and humidity levels.

To learn more about how our VRF performs in health and wellness facilities, check out these case studies: Choctaw General Hospital and Grand Lake Mental Health Center.

Keep Warm at Work This Winter Without Worrying About Costs

phonewithwinterclothes2

From extreme temperatures to weather-related absences and sporadic holiday schedules, office spaces can often waste energy and become uncomfortable in the winter months. This discomfort can cause employees to struggle through an on-again-off-again wrestling match with their sweaters. Happily, FacilitiesNet said there’s a solution: “If people are allowed to talk to and control the Internet of Things, it will be advantageous.”

With an abundance of smart technology – especially smart phones – employees can provide information about their individual comfort, and help to make heating systems more efficient in the process. Encouraging employees to interact with automation systems through app-based technology helps these systems to easily account for a wide range of data – identifying and maintaining the most agreeable office space. Businesses can further maximize employee comfort and minimize energy use by investing in interconnected systems that recognize fluctuations in weather and need.

We’re excited that as temperatures continue to drop, the Internet of Things continues to build momentum. Perhaps this is the last year office workers will need to do the sweater wrestle.

Consumer Testimonial: Sister Joyce Hollkamp

The Sisters of St. Joseph (Sisters), Third Order of St. Francis, in Garfield Heights, Ohio, had three goals when renovating their circa 1925 building: cut energy costs, go green and expand individual comfort and control. To do this, the Sisters replaced their boiler system with our WR2- and R2-Series VRF systems. The result: a 74 percent reduction in energy usage and $80,000 a year in savings.

Watch Sister Joyce Hollkamp reflect on VRF’s benefits in the below video, and read more about the project.

Introducing the CITY MULTI® Efficiency Evaluator

The industry continuously calls for better, easier, faster products. The CITY MULTI Efficiency Evaluator is our latest response.

The cloud-based application compares our Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) solutions to existing or proposed HVAC systems. It calculates expected energy usages, life cycle costs and LEED® points for each system based on multiple building factors. This allows contractors to not only tell but show customers just how the systems stack up.

The CITY MULTI Efficiency Evaluator uses a sophisticated building simulation program called WeidtSim. It evaluates a variety of HVAC technologies, including Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems, water source heat pumps, fan coils and chillers. It is also compatible with multiple devices for added convenience.

The CITY MULTI Efficiency Evaluator immediately transforms your sales pitch into a powerful, convincing illustration for your customers. It enhances the onsite consultation experience and reinforces why our VRF solutions are the ideal solutions.

Contact your local sales rep to learn how the CITY MULTI Efficiency Evaluator can help you on your next sales call.

Industry News: Is the Grass Really Greener for Green Homeowners?

February 20_Green Homeowners Survey Image
Are green homeowners really satisfied with their decision? Based on the results from a recent survey conducted by GuildQuality and commissioned by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) – they are. The survey was sent to 187 single-family, townhome and condominium homeowners who have purchased a National Green Building Standard-certified home in the past three years.

The results were pretty clear. Ninety-four percent of the homeowners said they would recommend a green home to a friend and an impressive 92 percent said they would purchase another green home. That’s not all though, as green homes scored pretty high in other aspects as well:

  • 71 percent believe that green homes are higher in quality.

  • 65 percent strongly agreed that having an energy-efficient home was an important factor in deciding to build or buy their home.

  • 55 percent knew their home may have cost more but felt the benefits outweighed the cost.

  • Low utility bills, energy efficiency and insulation are the qualities that green homeowners are most satisfied with.

At Mitsubishi Electric, we’ve always been strong supporters of green building and energy efficiency, so it’s nice to see that, in this case, the grass really is greener.
