Southwest Business Unit Supports Local Food Banks After Hurricane Harvey

sept2520171

Each year, the Southwest Business Unit dedicates two days to a worthy charity within its community, and this year was especially important to them. After Hurricane Harvey devastated the state of Texas earlier this month, our staff members volunteered their time helping families in need at local food banks.

On Sept. 13, staff members from the Dallas office spent time preparing 8,725 healthy meals for families at the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas. On Sept. 14, staff members from the Houston office helped produce and distribute 19,890 nutritious meals for senior citizens at the Houston Food Bank, the largest food bank in the nation. We’re deeply saddened about the devastation that Hurricane Harvey caused in Texas but we’re honored to have been able to lend a hand in helping the local families heal giving them a warm meal.

Mitsubishi Electric & PGA – A Relationship Built to Last

Pictured Left to Right: Stan Hall, executive director of the Gwinnett Championship Foundation; Larry Nelson, member of the World Golf Hall of Fame; Cayce Blanchard, senior vice president of corporate communications for Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc.; Miller Brady, senior vice president and chief of operations of Champions Tour

We are proud to announce that we’re not only continuing but expanding our sponsorship role of the Champions Tour through 2020!

Our parent company, Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc., will continue to be the title sponsor of the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, a tournament that kicks off the Champions Tour each year and boasts the second-longest span at one venue in Tour history. Starting this year, corporate will also be the title sponsor of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic – formerly known as the Greater Gwinnett Championship, of which we’ve been the presenting sponsor since 2012.

Our relationship with the PGA has been a fruitful one from the beginning eight years ago. Since 2007, we’ve aligned ourselves with golf pros and humanitarians Tom Watson, Fred Couples, Fred Funk, Corey Pavin and Miguel Angel Jimenez. We’ve raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities through Hawaii’s Big Island community and the Gwinnett Championship Foundation. We’ve built a rapport with inspiring members of the community, from patients and families at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to active and reserve members of the armed forces.

Our renewed sponsorship marks the first time since 2008 that one company has served as a title sponsor of multiple events in the same season on the Champions Tour, which underscores our loyalty to the PGA and our commitment to its tournament communities.

Greater Gwinnett Championship: All About Golf & Giving Back

The annual Greater Gwinnett Championship wrapped up prematurely on April 19 at the prestigious TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga. This was the third year in a row that we are the presenting sponsor of the PGA Champions Tour event.

April 23_Greater Gwinnett Championship ImageOur global brand ambassador and animated PGA pro, Miguel Angel Jimenez, aimed to defend his title but it was Olin Browne who ultimately took home the top spot and $1.8 million purse. Browne finished 12-under par, setting a new course record, despite inclement weather throughout the week that resulted in the cancellation of the final round.

Fred Funk and Corey Pavin were also on the course alongside a number of local sports celebrities – including Matt Ryan and Steve Bartkowski, the current and former quarterbacks for the Atlanta Falcons; Kevin Butler, the first kicker inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame; and John Smoltz, former pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.

The Greater Gwinnett Championship is more than just a battle on the fairways and greens, however. It’s an opportunity to give back to Gwinnett County and make significant impacts in the community.

  • Proceeds from the event are given to local charities each year. The 2015 benefitting charities were the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation.

  • Mexican professional golfer and PGA Champions Tour member Esteban Toledo joined us at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he autographed toy golf sets, shared a few putting tips and went on-air with THE VOICE at Seacrest Studios, a radio show broadcasted from the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta that gives children an opportunity to learn about the exciting world of radio and TV broadcasting during their hospital stay. We handed out free tickets to the championship for the children and their families to see the golf pros in action.

  • Active and reserve members of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force were at the 16th hole to caddie for – or in some cases, play – alongside the PGA pros. A Patriots’ Outpost with snacks and refreshments was located on the 18th fairway for military members and their families to enjoy.

Operation FINALLY HOME: Our First Donation for a Hero!

Last month, we were honored to donate our residential systems to a true American hero, and mark the beginning of our official partnership with Operation FINALLY HOME!

The new home belongs to Staff Sergeant Ray Coffey, who was forced to retire after several insurgent attacks left him with severe injuries, following two deployments to Iraq. Ray returned home with a brain injury that required the temperature in his family’s home be kept so low that they had to wear heavy jackets while indoors.

Henley Homes Inc., Liberty Hill, Texas, built the custom and mortgage-free home for Ray and his family.

With the installation of our systems, Henley Homes Inc. was able to provide both Ray and his family with an environment that suits each of their needs.

“In Ray’s situation when you have migraine headaches, PTSD, he needed a dark room that we could get very cold. Mitsubishi stepped up and gave us individual room air conditioners,” said Gary Henley, co-owner of Henley Homes, Inc.

Ray’s incredible story, as well as footage of the home dedication, was picked up by broadcasting stations in Austin and Philadelphia. One anchor, Jennifer Kendall, anchor, Fox News, had it right when she said, “That means for the first time in a long time one American hero can live comfortably in his home of the brave.”

Ray’s full story can be seen here on My FOX Austin.

We’d like to offer a special thanks to Casa Mechanical Services for installing the equipment. We wish Ray and his family the best in their new home and look forward to our continued partnership with Operation FINALLY HOME in the years to come!

We first blogged about our official partnership with Operation FINALLY HOME last Veterans Day.

PGA Champions Tour Returns to Gwinnett

April 22_Greater Gwinnett Championship Image

The Greater Gwinnett Championship returned to Georgia again this year where 81 golf professionals, including Mitsubishi Electric-sponsored Fred Couples, vied for the 2014 title. We sponsored the PGA Champions Tour event for the second year in a row.

World Golf Hall of Fame members and other notable Champions Tour professionals competed for the $1.8 million purse in the 54-hole golf tournament, held from April 14-20 at the prestigious TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga. Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez took the top spot. Jimenez is the 18th player in Champions Tour history to win in his Tour debut and only the third player to have led from start to finish.

The Greater Gwinnett Championship not only brought an exciting event to Gwinnett County for the past two years, but also generated significant charitable and economic impacts in the community. All of the proceeds from the event benefit local charities through the Gwinnett Championship Foundation, Inc. The 2014 benefitting charities include the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Georgia Gwinnett College Foundation and the Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation.

Our relationship with professional golf started in 2007 when our parent company, Mitsubishi Electric, first became a PGA Tour sponsor. We became the title sponsor for the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai two years later, so it was a natural next step for our division to sponsor the 2013 Greater Gwinnett Championship. We are pleased to continue our support of the Champions Tour in Gwinnett County – our home for more than 20 years.
