Greater Gwinnett Championship: All About Golf & Giving Back

The annual Greater Gwinnett Championship wrapped up prematurely on April 19 at the prestigious TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga. This was the third year in a row that we are the presenting sponsor of the PGA Champions Tour event.

April 23_Greater Gwinnett Championship ImageOur global brand ambassador and animated PGA pro, Miguel Angel Jimenez, aimed to defend his title but it was Olin Browne who ultimately took home the top spot and $1.8 million purse. Browne finished 12-under par, setting a new course record, despite inclement weather throughout the week that resulted in the cancellation of the final round.

Fred Funk and Corey Pavin were also on the course alongside a number of local sports celebrities – including Matt Ryan and Steve Bartkowski, the current and former quarterbacks for the Atlanta Falcons; Kevin Butler, the first kicker inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame; and John Smoltz, former pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.

The Greater Gwinnett Championship is more than just a battle on the fairways and greens, however. It’s an opportunity to give back to Gwinnett County and make significant impacts in the community.

  • Proceeds from the event are given to local charities each year. The 2015 benefitting charities were the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation.

  • Mexican professional golfer and PGA Champions Tour member Esteban Toledo joined us at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he autographed toy golf sets, shared a few putting tips and went on-air with THE VOICE at Seacrest Studios, a radio show broadcasted from the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta that gives children an opportunity to learn about the exciting world of radio and TV broadcasting during their hospital stay. We handed out free tickets to the championship for the children and their families to see the golf pros in action.

  • Active and reserve members of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force were at the 16th hole to caddie for – or in some cases, play – alongside the PGA pros. A Patriots’ Outpost with snacks and refreshments was located on the 18th fairway for military members and their families to enjoy.

PGA Tour, European Tour and Champions Tour golfer Miguel Ángel Jiménez is known for his accomplishments and playful personality, both on and off the course. Check out his celebratory dance at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship to see what we mean. We’re proud to announce that this animated and personable golf pro is now Mitsubishi Electric Corporation’s first ever global brand ambassador.

Miguel proudly wore our corporate logo for the first time at the 2015 Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hualalai, Hawaii, where he also took the No.1 spot. “Miguel Ángel Jiménez embodies our goal to always strive to achieve ‘something better’ as we continue to innovate and grow,” said Kiyoshi Furukawa, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc. “His approach to life and each accomplishment demonstrates a passion and commitment we can appreciate and enjoy.”

Mitsubishi Electric has a long-running relationship with professional golf. The company has been a corporate sponsor of the PGA Tour and Champions Tour since 2007. Since 2012, golf pros Corey Pavin, Fred Funk and Fred Couples have been ambassadors for the HVAC division and the faces of some of our TV commercials. We are humbled to add Miguel to the list and to have one of the most distinguished players around the world represent our brand globally.
