RedLINK to the Rescue

Modern technology is improving how we interact in our everyday lives. One way is how we can respond to potentially dangerous situations, which was the case for homeowners Henry and Helen Roy.

April 28_RedLINK Testimonial ImageThe Roys live in Palmer, Massachusetts, where temperatures can get as low as minus 21 degrees Fahrenheit. Henry Roy lost his hearing and suffers from chronic health issues. Late last fall, the Roys lost power and, subsequently, all forms of communication to the outside world. No power meant no heat, which posed a potentially life-threatening situation for the couple.

Thankfully, the Roys had opted to connect their M-Series system to the Honeywell RedLINK Internet Gateway (RedLINK), which offers remote control for the HVAC system using any Internet-enabled smart device. In addition to turning the system on or off and adjusting the temperature, users can receive automatic system alerts – which was particularly crucial in the Roys’ case. When the Roys’ lost power, the couple’s grandson received an email alert informing him of the situation. He called the power company immediately and was able to get his grandparents’ power turned back on. The HVAC system was then back up and running. Thanks to RedLINK, the Roys were kept safe and sound.

“It’s comforting to know our Mitsubishi [Electric] systems are able to let our family know if anything goes wrong at our house,” says Helen Roy.

Aging in Place Is In, Retirement Homes Are (Kind of) Out

August 4_Aging in Place_Image 1Think everyone is planning to sell their homes after they retire? Well, think again.

An AARP study found 90 percent of people over the age of 65 would like to, if possible, stay in their homes. Eighty percent have no intention of leaving. What does this mean for the building industry? Owners want products that have the potential to outlast them and can cater to their needs as they age. They want homes and products that grow with them.

Long-lasting, adaptable equipment, like our HVAC systems, fit the bill. For example, our M-Series system helped an elderly couple age in place. They can now count on cooling and heating in even the most severe weather, which otherwise would have posed a health hazard. This couple is just one example; over 10,000 baby boomers reach retirement every day, and more and more make no plans to leave their homes.

Read more about the baby boomers, aging in place and the concept behind the universal home design, which the National Association of Home Builders describes as “the design of environments and products to be usable by all people.”
