L-Gen Gets Its First Accolade; Diamond Controls Wins Its Third This Year


We are proud to announce two new award wins for two different products!

Architectural Record honored our L-Generation Air Source VRF Outdoor Units with its 2015 Record Product Award. This award recognizes new building products  in the Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning category that present the most innovative and useful offerings available to architects, specifiers and designers. As if one award win isn’t exciting enough, Architectural Products recognized Diamond Controls™ with its Product Innovation Award – the third accolade this year for Diamond Controls! This award recognizes outstanding product ingenuity in the built environment. Entries were judged by more than 40 professionals with expertise in the design industry. Another Win for Diamond Controls

DDA_SILVER_2011Diamond Controls™ has been repeatedly recognized by the industry for its value and ingenuity. This week, it adds another accolade to the list: winning ACH&R News’ 2015 Dealer Design Award.

This year, 107 entries vied for the gold, silver and bronze awards. Entries were judged by experienced contractors from around the U.S., who identified a theme across each of the 15 product categories: Leading products are easier to access, easier to install and more user-friendly. As Editor-in-Chief Kyle Gargaro pointed out, the award is “the only HVACR product competition that is judged by the HVACR contractor, which is a true test for how good a product is.”

Diamond Contractor™ Conference 2015: Whole-home Solutions

Expanding whole-home solutions has come up at lot at the conference, which is no surprise given that it’s been identified as one of our top business strategies. Steve Scarborough, south business unit sales manager, residential, introduced the topic yesterday. “Seventy percent of homes in the United States have inadequate airflow leading to rooms that are too hot or too cold.” With 48 million existing homes in the market today, that’s a whole lot of homeowners who could benefit from whole-home solutions. Our goal, he noted, is to provide contractors with the tools that help close the deal – “ultimately, a national marketing campaign, more marketable products, fewer callbacks and a smart way to respond to homeowner demand for comfort throughout the home.”

Michelle Robb, director, product planning, and Charles Miltiades, senior product manager, controls, continued this conversation by discussing the products that help close the deal, and the thoughts that go into product design. “We’re aware that energy costs, controls systems, zone control and replacing existing equipment are big issues for contractors because they’re big issues for your customers,” Robb said.

Miltiades called out kumo cloud™ – a new app and web service enabling wireless control of our systems – as being a benefit to whole-home solutions. Homeowners will monitor and operate their HVAC systems from their smartphones – something they are increasingly demanding.

Robb is familiar with this demand, having installed a Diamond Comfort System in her own home this month – something she is confident was a good decision. She said contractors must work to educate their buyers so buyers can make their own good decisions. “Why did I buy into Diamond Comfort Systems? I’m an informed consumer because I’m in the industry, but beyond that my contractor took the time to review what the 20-year age of my ductwork meant – something I hadn’t thought about as fully. That made a big difference for me. So you need to inform your customer.”

What might customers want to hear about? Whole-home solutions and kumo cloud are a great start.

New Building Trends in Retail Facilities


The average brick and mortar store is evolving. Customer experience is paramount and store owners are now looking to building design to drive customer traffic. According to Chain Store Age, retailers are rapidly adopting interactive technology that benefits both the customer and building management. Based on their “Smart Building Trends” list, here are a few concepts facility managers should keep in mind:

Energy Efficiency is Key: According to ENERGY STAR®, “On average, 30 cents of every dollar spent on energy use in commercial buildings is wasted through inefficiencies.” ENERGY STAR suggests choosing energy-efficient systems is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to reduce energy use.

Use Smart Controls: Many retailers are implementing consumer-facing apps and innovations to bring in patrons, but smart technologies can also be a game-changer for building management. For example, Diamond Controls™ from Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating pairs automation and facility management to allow users to control multiple systems through a single interface. Users are able to control a whole building or multiple building sites with Diamond Controls.

Augmented Reality for Maintenance: Last year, IBM stated that, “augmented reality is transforming building management.” Augmented reality allows users to experience and interact with video, images and audio ­– which are superimposed over real physical spaces and objects – through their smart devices. For example, QR codes can be programmed and scanned to reveal pertinent information about a system to a contractor. This can help easily identify any issues or errors within a system.

Project Profile: R.J. Reynolds Building

For 80 years, the historic R.J. Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, served as the corporate headquarters for The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, a subsidary of Reynolds America, Inc. In 2009, when Reynolds America relocated offices, the building went up for sale. But in 2014, the building gained new owners. PMC Property Group, Philadelphia, and Kimpton Hotels & Restaurant Group, San Francisco, purchased the building with the plan to offer a boutqiue hotel and luxury apartments to visitors and/or future residents of Winston-Salem.

A challenge of the Reynolds Building’s restoration was replacing the outdated HVAC system with a modern, energy-efficient system that could meet the building’s needs. The building needed an unobtrusive and whisper-quiet system while providing tenants with individual control. The mechanical contractor on the job, First State Mechanical, Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, knew Mitsubishi Electric Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) technology was the only solution because of its flexibility in design and installation, and because it would not cause any damage to the building’s architecture.

With technical assistance from Comfort Supply, Inc., Pittsburgh, the project team easily installed 84 outdoor units and 425 indoor units, providing the building with a maximum capacity of 5.8 million Btus. In addition to the mechanical equipment, the Reynolds Building was also outfitted with superior controls to keep its tenants comfortable year-round. For the hotel side, specifically, the building system operators have front-end control of the entire building’s HVAC system by using our Diamond Controls™. However, nearly all rooms within the apartments and hotel utilize SmartME Remote Controllers, which allows the building to conserve energy.

Through the renovation, the Reynolds Building has been given new purpose, serving as one of the greatest places to stay or live in Winston-Salem. Once again, our VRF has proven itself to be an effective cooling and heating solution in historic renovations.

Maximizing Comfort in Health and Wellness Facilities


Healthcare Facilities Management magazine recently reported the success of some HVAC systems in health and wellness facilities. With stringent indoor air quality requirements, these facilities need systems that condition outside air, monitor and control humidity, filter air and provide ample ventilation. The article reported that beyond these measurable requirements, facility managers also want sustainable and energy-efficient systems. It also recognized a few manufacturers – including us – as meeting these needs.

Specifically, our latest Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) innovation, CITY MULTI® L-Generation Air-source technology, was recognized for its improvements in efficiency and its ability to maximize heat transfer. In regard to facility management, the magazine celebrated our Diamond Controls™ Solutions for its assistance in helping managers modify zone temperatures and observe building conditions, such as occupancy, CO2 levels, energy usage and humidity levels.
